University Foundation College to open in August

University Foundation College has become NCUK’s latest partner and the first in the State of Qatar. The Partnership was officially announced at the Ritz Carlton, Doha, on Wednesday 17th May by Sheikh Mohammed Bin Abdulrahman Al Thani. The event was also attended by Dr Muthana Al Kubaisy, Director, Ministry of Education and Higher Education, Frank Fitzpatrick, Director, British Council Qatar and Maria McKenna, NCUK’s Regional Director.

University Foundation College, a first of its kind in the region, is a new entrant in the education sector in Qatar approved by the Ministry of Education and Higher Education to offer NCUK International Foundation Year (IFY), which guarantees progression to thousands of degrees at leading universities. The IFY 36-week programme will be a ‘bridge’ between high school education in Qatar and an undergraduate degree in the UK and elsewhere. The programme develops the learning skills, subject knowledge and English language skills to enable students to become independent and autonomous learners. The College is situated in the Madinat Khalifa South district of Doha and opens its doors in September 2017.

Together, Anoop Patel, Director Recruitment and Admissions at University Foundation College and Nisairy Al Tahir, Head of Planning and Communications have been instrumental in initiating the tie-up between NCUK and University Foundation College in Qatar over the last 12 months.

"There are currently no UK foundation programmes in Qatar. These programmes will develop the base on the forward-looking study of the needs of the Qatari students in line with the Qatar National Vision 2030. Our tie up with NCUK, a renowned quality global foundation provider, is to provide this service to help the State of Qatar in meeting its objectives in developing and maintaining its higher education strategy." - Anoop Patel, Director of Recruitment and Admissions, University Foundation College.

The NCUK curriculum will be delivered by highly qualified, UK trained specialist teachers and quality assured by NCUK. This is a great proposition for international students from the GCC to obtain a world-leading qualification in Qatar whilst having the flexibility and choice to access a wide range of leading universities.

"By joining the NCUK network, University Foundation College have evidenced robust academic management and have experienced, well-qualified tutors. With their modern facilities in Doha, it is an attractive destination for international students, too, as a staging post before coming to the UK. We believe they will be a great addition to the NCUK global network." - Georgina Jones, Market Development Director, NCUK.

The project is fully endorsed and supported by Sheikh Mohammed Bin Abdulrahman Al Thani. He has demonstrated his commitment and desire to offer NCUK foundation preparation qualifications in Qatar to benefit the development and learning of students in line with the Qatar National Vision 2030. In fact, there are several benefits for University Foundation College students who will enrol on the IFY as they will obtain a quality qualification that meets the highest academic standards, taught by qualified staff and is also widely recognised by universities in the UK and internationally. Moreover, the IFY qualification is comparable with ‘A level’ qualifications widely accepted for admission to universities globally.

"The UK is an increasingly popular destination for Qatari students wishing to enrol on undergraduate degree course but lack the necessary entry qualifications to secure admission. That’s why we have partnered with NCUK to offer this foundation provision in Qatar to meet the needs of this growing segment. It is our desire to offer the highest quality of education to the young women and men of Qatar." - Anoop Patel, Director of Recruitment and Admissions, University Foundation College.

For students, who do not meet the NCUK entry requirements, University Foundation College also offers a Pre Foundation 24-week programme to enhance academic English language and basic Mathematics skills. There is a focus on the skills students need to succeed when they progress to the NCUK International Foundation Year. Mr Patel added, “We are launching this programme to give students an opportunity to build their skills to ease their transition to NCUK IFY programme or to better equip them will skills to join the workforce.”

University Foundation College has a dedicated team to support and help students to navigate their way through the UK university application process. Students will be provided with thousands of degree options to choose from, and the completion of the IFY will guarantee their progression to one of the NCUK universities.
